But who is this Guillaume?

Guillaume de Gausselme (or Guillem-Gaucelm) was the lord of Teillet in the early 13th century. He is said to have been miraculously cured of cancer by the water of the Holy Grave. In gratitude, he bequeathed his fortune to the abbey of Sainte Marie d’Arles sur Tech in 1204 and was buried there on April 10, 1211.

On the square in front of the abbey church you can still see his tombstone, embedded in the wall, above the tomb. This white marble sarcophagus dating from the 4th century is the only remaining vestige of the early Christian sanctuary installed in the site of the Roman baths (Les Bains d’Arles). It would have curative virtues since the abbot Arnulphe would have deposited there the relics of the patron saints of Arles, Nin and Non.

Object of curiosity for some or object of great veneration for others, it contributes, by itself, to establish the fame of the abbey. Its legend endures even though science has explained the mysterious phenomenon (in 1961, 1999 and 2000) and every July 30th, for the patronal feast, water from the tomb is distributed to the inhabitants and tourists.
