But who is this Wilfred?

Born around 840, Wilfred (or Guifred – “victorious peace”) was the son of Sunifred I, Count of Urgell and Cerdanya. A bold fighter, he defeated the Muslims on several occasions. At the Council of Troyes in 878, he obtained from King Louis the Beggar the hereditary title of Count of Barcelona and Girona and was later considered the founding father of Catalonia.

According to legend, he was the origin of the four “blood bars”, vertical red stripes on the yellow coat of arms of the Counts of Barcelona. Wilfred is said to have been victorious but wounded in battle against the Normans, and King Charles the Bald of France rewarded him by plunging four fingers into the wound and drawing four blood marks on his golden shield, thus giving him his coat of arms.

Around 885 Wilfred created the county of Ausonne and re-established the bishopric on the territories reconquered from the Saracens. Preventing a possible return of the “infidels” he developed Catholicism by building several abbeys. Guifred the Velu died in 897 fighting the Muslim lord Llop ibn Muhammad.
